The Luxury of A Well-Tended Lawn
There’s something incredibly soothing about gazing out at a well-tended lawn. The expanse of lush, green grass, every blade cut to exactly the perfect height, the moist shimmer of a distant sprinkler, and the indescribably comforting aroma of freshly mown grass, all combine to fill our hearts with peace and joy. Lawns are one of the best examples of how nature can sometimes be shaped by human hands into something new and wonderful, perhaps even superior to its original form, an act of mind over matter that makes us feel as if we have released nature’s intrinsic hidden beauty, similar to carefully cutting a raw gem into a multifaceted jewel.
Well, I know I am not alone in this, the lawn is a source of pride and joy for thousands of New Zealanders, who put a great deal of time and effort into keeping their personal planted paradises healthy and happy. Lawn-keepers seek out the highest quality grass seed and lawn fertiliser in NZ because of all the pleasure grass brings us. After spending a long day performing the requisite lawn care and maintenance, we are rewarded for our efforts by the satisfaction we feel as we sit back in our comfy lawn chairs with a cool drink and admire our handiwork, delighted by the tranquil symmetry of the grassy expanse spread before us.
People tend to think grass is just grass, but there are actually many varieties of this amazing plant, so let’s take a moment to examine some of New Zealand’s favourites:
Kikuyu – Hailing from East Africa’s highlands, this vigorous grass stays green in summer, tolerates partial shade, and thrives at the bases of large trees where other grasses might falter. Kikuyu’s turf is dense, making it resistant to pests like weeds, disease, and insects. It prefers the heat and is drought resistant, but like any grass, loves to be watered, and presents its best under a generous schedule, especially on the hottest days. It should be noted it does not love the cold and thrives best in New Zealand’s frost-free regions.
Tall Fescue – This resilient grass originated in the temperate zones of Europe and tolerates a wide range of weather conditions. It’s quite shade tolerant and also thrives in full sun. Tall fescue is sturdy and tough, making it an excellent choice for play areas. Its roots grow deep, making it resistant to dry spells, but like any grass, it appreciates a good soaking. Overall, it prefers things on the cool side, but it can also thrive in full sun and under partial shade.
Ryegrass – A versatile, hearty grass from Europe, its rapid growth and resistance to abuse make it the grass of choice for public parks and playing fields, whilst its dark green beauty ensures it remains a mainstay of private lawns. It can handle some shade, and its deep roots help it withstand heat and dry weather. Ryegrass requires regular watering but rewards you with a durable and attractive lawn.
